family of Lindfield and Plumpton, Sussex.

John West and Ann LANGRIDGE were married on the 29th of April 1758 at Lindfield, Sussex.
They had children:-
(i) John baptised on the 24th May 1761, Lindfield.
(ii) Samuel baptised on the 21st October 1764, Lindfield 

Samuel married  Hannah SCOTT (1789 - ) on the 17th October 1808 at Horsted Keynes.
He is probably the Samuel West enrolled in the Volunteer Cavalary in 1803,
and from 1813 to 1825 is described as a labourer.  
He was buried at Lindfield on the 30th May 1825.
The children of this marriage were:-
(i) John  baptised  19th March 1809 at Horsted Keynes
(ii) Elizabeth baptised 24th December 1811 at Lindfield
(iii) Ann baptised 26th September 1813 Lindfield
(iv) Mary  baptised 10th March 1816 at Lindfield and married on the 24th July 1850 to James TIDEY
(v)Samuel  baptised on the 13th December 1818 at Lindfield and married on the 16th May 1841 to  Barbara WICKS (1822 - 1887) at Lewes, St John's (sub-castro).
(vi) Eliza baptised 16th October 1825 Lindfield.

Samuel WEST (1818 - 188) married Barbara WICKS (1822 - 1887)  of Courthouse farm on 16th May 1841 at Lewes, St John's (sub-castro).
The children of this marriage were.
(i) James baptised 14th September 1845 Plumpton
(ii) John born at Chailey
(iii) Sarah Elizabeth baptised 23rd December 1849 at Hamsey and married William WOOD on the 25th September 1881 at Plumpton.
(iv) Mary baptised 31st January 1858 at Plumpton
(v) William  born on the 31st December 1854  married on the 23rd December 1876 to Eliza BARTRUP  (1851 - 1923).
(vi) George Ambrose   baptised 6th October 1861 Plumpton and married the 16th December 1883 to Sarah Ann HARRIS.


Courthouse farm is in a detached part of St. John's sub castro parish in Lewes, hence the marriage in Lewes.
Courthouse could be the manor court house for this detached part of the parish or land belonging to a manor or a manor official.
William West 1854 - 1913 This photo of William West was taken about 1910

William WEST born on the 31st December 1854 at  Allington Cottages, Chailey and buried on the 11th December 1913 at Plumpton.
He married on the 23rd December 1876 to Eliza BARTRUP  (1851 - 1923).
In 1861 William was living at Plumpton Place, Plumpton age 6 born Chailey and by 1871 a farm labourer.  
By 1879 he is described as a cowman, and in 1883 a labourer. By then the family were living at Canister cottages in Chailey (in East Chiltington from 1934).
They had three daughters,
(i) Alice Mary (1877 - ) married John COBBY (1870 - 1924)
(ii) Clara Louise (1879 - 1958) married Frederick HUGGETT
(iii) Annie Elizabeth  (1882 - 1961)  married  Alfred John COX (1885 - 1954)

George Ambrose  baptised 6th October 1861 Plumpton and married the 16th December 1883 to Sarah Ann HARRIS.
In 1881 he was an ostler at the White Horse Inn, Hurstpierpoint but by 1883 was the tenant farmer at Piddingworth (Ditchling).
He was blinded in a farming accident.
They had children
(i) Annie Louise baptised 2nd November 1884 at Plumpton
(ii) Joseph Ambrose baptised 31st March 1888 at Plumpton
(iii) George William baptised 29th July 1890 at Plumpton
(iv) John Henry born 14th November 1892, married Florence HOUNSOME on 24th November 1914 in Brighton and died 1926
(v) Rose Margaret baptised 5th May 1895 at Plumpton married Ernest LEONARD
