Where my grandmother, Annie Elizabeth WEST (1882 - 1961), was born.
From the north-west; the cottages are on the inside loop of the B2116 road as it makes a hollow with the Downs. Map Reference TQ 375 130. "Canister Cottages are said to be so called from their shape." The Place-Names of Sussex, A.Mawer & F M Stenton, 1930. More likely once a holding of the de Councister family of Balcombe. SAC Volume 118, 319. Since 1934 the cottages have been in the parish of East Chiltington. |
The semi-detached building was converted to a single dwelling sometime in the 1980s and the
inevitable extension was added. In 1901 two families including a boarder, 16 people in all, were living in the cottages. |
